The Archdemon is dead, the Blight is quelled, and peace is restored to Ferelden. For a Grey Warden who specializes in saving the world, what else could you possibly accomplish? As a full expansion to Dragon Age: Origins, that’s the question Awakening is called upon to address. Unfortunately, the answer seems to be “not much.”

It's only been about four months since BioWare released their fantasy RPG Dragon Age: Origins, and now they're gearing up to release a full expansion pack. Some have seen the short timeframe and were rightly skeptical, wondering if this is just a slightly-expanded DLC pack on a disc with a $40 price tag. [...] |

Getting this out of the way first, Awakening is an expansion, not a sequel. This means it's more about tweaks than major improvements, and you probably already know whether or not you will like the game. However, this article will give you an idea of what to expect and what has been tweaked and changed. |

Claiming that something is “more of the same” is usually, at best, a way of damning with faint praise. If that phrase sums up your judgment then you're implying that while there might be new stuff it doesn't make a major difference and that the experience is, in many ways, the same. |

Last week's preview set the stage for BioWare's first official expansion to Dragon Age Origins by offering an overview of the basic starting situation. The Warden, after the final events in Dragon Age Origins, has come to the stronghold of Vigil's Keep in Amaranthine to take charge of the Grey Wardens' war against the last remnants of Darkspawn who fled north from Denerim and splintered into warring tribes. Within the first few hours of the expansion, the Warden will be faced with momentous choices that will help shape the fate of Ferelden. This week we're changing gears to look at some of the mechanical changes to the game, exploring some of the ways your character can grow as you move through the tougher challenges of Awakening. |

Dragon Age is an amazing game that has laid claim to an embarrassingly large amount of my time over the past few months. From puzzling out the ethical problems posed by Zarthian's questionable motivations to cursing and screaming through repeated battles against the Broodmother, the game has continued to captivate me since it was first released last year. Thanks to the upcoming Awakening expansion, there's a chance to continue the story past its conclusion to see what happens in the wake of the Grey Warden's final moments in the original game. I've been playing through the PC version of the expansion over the last week or so and, rather than do a straight feature-focused preview, I thought I'd just give you a big picture view of the first few hours of the game. |

Lead Designer of Dragon Age Origins: Awakening Ferret Baudoin, enthusiastically giddy, smiled after every one of my questions. Applying the wisdom learned from creating the original title, the tips and tricks that only come from experience, he and his team had been crafting this expansion for nearly a year, and this marked one of the first times they were finally able to talk about it. Though disappointed that he couldn’t divulge the details on the embargo list, he was as psyched as the most avid fan of Dragon Age: Origins can ever be. |

There's no question that Dragon Age Origins was one of the best releases in 2009. It was a much needed game for an ailing RPG genre, and the ailing fans that come with it. Granted it was a western RPG, it didn't stop people from enjoying it. Besides, with a combat system that was very reminiscent of Final Fantasy XII, Dragon Age just managed to push all the right buttons with gamers, and so we're glad to see BioWare giving us an expansion pack. Due out on March 16th, Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening is the first of many expansions to come. |
